ESEB is delighted to welcome you to the Second Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology. Joint Congresses take place every six years and bring together four of the world's largest academic societies in the field of evolutionary biology: the European Society for Evolutionary Biology, the American Society of Naturalists, the Society for the Study of Evolution and the Society of Systematic Biologists. The first joint congress was in Ottawa, Canada in 2012. The current (i.e. second) will be held in Montpellier, France, on August 19-22 2018.
The venue of the meeting will be The Corum, a convention center ideally located in the heart of Montpellier historic neighborhood, easily accessed by public transportation and at very short walking distance from restaurants, cafes and hotels. Due to space constraints, attendance will be limited to 2500 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis.
A welcome reception will take place on Saturday August 18. The official program, beginning on Sunday August 19, will largely follow the traditional organization of an ESEB meeting: it will consist of a series of parallel sessions running throughout the 4 days. We expect to have approximately 800 oral presentations as part of a diverse array of symposia selected by our Scientific Committee. We will also have poster sessions associated with each of the symposia, and plenary talks by the presidents of SSE, SSB and ASN, by recipients of the ESEB Presidential Award and of Stephen Jay Gould Outreach Prize. The conference dinner will take place the evening of Wednesday, August 22nd, at the Abbaye de Valmagne, a spectacular venue, one-hour drive away from Montpellier.
On the occasion of the II Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology, we have the ambition for Montpellier to become a great showcase for the study of Evolution. As such, several outreach activities, aimed at the general public, will take place in the city before, during and after the congress.
The call for symposia is closed. The Scientific committee has now completed the hard task of selecting symposia from the very numerous and high quality proposals received from a very diverse scientific community. We thank all the people who enthusiastically proposed to organize symposia and regret that space constraints did not allow us to retain more of the proposals. You can see the list of selected symposia here.
The call for contributed presentations is now closed. We have received more than 3600 proposals, currently evaluated by symposia organizers. Unfortunately, the capacity of the conference venue does not allow us to accept more than 2000 contributions (talks and posters) and we are very sorry to be unable to accommodate more of these enthusiastic and high quality proposals. Symposium organizers have received instructions to favor a diversity of presenters and must be thanked for their huge, difficult and essential work in selecting abstracts for this meeting.
The organizers value gender balance and wish to ensure that symposia selected for this meeting draw participants of both sexes equally. ESEB EO conference attendance aid grants are therefore available with the aim to increase the participation of women. Childcare will also be provided on the venue during the whole conference.
Organizing societies offer travel stipends to support participation. Consult their web pages for more information.
Registration costs will be similar to those at past ESEB Conferences with reduced fares for students and members of the different societies. We will offer the option of cheap lodging at University dorms for those travelling on a low budget. Other options for accommodation can be consulted already, but we advise to book lodging only after registration is secured.
Because of the cap on the total number of participants for our conference (2500), registration will be closed once this number is reached. There will be a period where presenters will have priority to register. But, after that registration is open for all, we will apply a first-come, first served rule. Given the number of abstracts that were submitted, we expect the cap to be reached very quickly once registration is open for all. Prepare your registration in advance, by checking instructions on the website to speed up the process. Because of many side events and options offered, the registration process will be longer than what is typical for ESEB meetings. Anticipate that you may need at least 30 minutes to register, if you have prepared in advance and checked those options before.
Isabelle Olivieri was a strong proponent of the joint Evolution congresses and devoted a lot of effort while she was President of ESEB to see them launched. We therefore dedicate this meeting to her memory.
This site will be updated as soon as relevant information becomes available. Visit it regularly!
We look forward to seeing you in Montpellier!
